Soccer

Soccer, also known as football in most countries outside North America, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players each. The objective of the game is to score goals by getting a spherical ball into the opposing team’s net, which is guarded by a goalkeeper. The game is played on a rectangular field, called a pitch, with a goal at each end.

Soccer is governed by a set of rules known as the Laws of the Game, which are maintained by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). The game is played in two halves of 45 minutes each, with additional stoppage time added at the referee’s discretion. Players primarily use their feet to control and pass the ball, but they may also use their torso and head; the only player allowed to use their hands is the goalkeeper, and only within the penalty area.

Soccer is one of the most popular sports globally, with millions of players and fans. Major international competitions include the FIFA World Cup and various continental championships, which draw significant attention and participation from countries around the world. The simplicity of its rules and the minimal equipment required to play contribute to its widespread appeal and accessibility.
